Been a while!

Well, its been far too long since my last update...
I've not quit, but had some bad luck since the Indoor Championships in March.

An accumulation of bad weather, little time due to work and studying for my PGCE and also focusing on one sport rather than train for both has left me effectively un-race fit.

My wisdom tooth became infected several times (due to be removed on the 10th July) and I also had a bout of Flu with a Chest Infection that left me helpless for around 2 weeks...

There was a positive, completing a 75 mile sportive, which probably also magnified my illness, but at least it was a success!

My illness meant I missed the National Outdoor Track championships, and in turn missing my last chance to gain a qualifying time for the European Championships in Hungary, not that I would have been near competitive.  Before that, I pulled out of the London Inline Marathon - lack of hill training on skates and ill-fitting boots meant that I just couldn't perform, this lead to me losing focus and motivation, I ended up storming off, getting in my car and driving home.  After cooling off, it highlighted my weaknesses and what aspect I need to work on in training, if only the British weather would stay dry!

In a year where Sport is the forefront of many peoples minds, it appears that its just not going to be MY year.  However, skating-wise there is still the National Marathon Championships in October, and perhaps my last chance to produce a respectable result on skates.

I am racing my first Road Bike race Thursday evening, and hopefully I can mount some kind of challenge! I'll update on that when I can!

Felt tired today... With my back getting a little niggle on Monday, a half decent 30 minute ride + 5x500m sprints on the WattBike on Tuesday, my cycle in to work and weights just felt so tiresome.

tomorrow will be the last hardish session of my build up week, with Friday and Saturday just some light active recovery work plus upping my carbohydrate intake to boost my stores.

With Rob's illness, I'll be competing in the 2 man relay with Errol, plus the 100m TT, 500m sprint and the 1500m, not to mention the heats to progress!

Definitely going to need my rest, and lots of energy for Sunday!

Not long until Champs!

Well, the pinnacle of the Indoor season is almost upon us!

Training at the moment is going well... a few cycles into work, smashing out the hills, weights and sprints to name but a few sessions.

The latter, "Sprints" seems to be showing (when looking at results from the WattBike) that my peak power is not really improving - however my muscular endurance seems to be vastly improving.  I managed all 5 of my 500m efforts under 34 seconds, which I am generally quite pleased with.

My back still needs a bit of work, and i'll most likely be racing at the champs with a back support - just to make sure.

Fingers crossed I can be competitive!

Hard training starts now.... well tomorrow!

Well the Wisbech event proved eventfull! A very slippery floor made for lots of falls and many false starts!

A quick summary

Race 1: Terrible start, came into first corner in 4th and couldn't get out due to the grip.  Finished 4th.
Race 2: Better start, went into 3rd - however clipped skates sent me spinning, leaving me playing catch up and finishing in 5th.
Race 3: My best race, good start and decent lines, held 3rd place till the finish
Cat Overall: 3rd

Race 4: Blistering start, into first and help until the last 6 laps when my frame came loose.  Held on for 2nd.

Not bad considering I had NO grip... very dusty surface which lead to very little power and a lot of energy being spent just trying to keep up.

A light weights sesh this morning will be followed by 3 weeks hard graft until Champs - legs and back are the key, with sprints/high rpm needed for leg speed.

Eurgh... The common cold rears its ugly head...

Well I had planned to ride with the Essex Road lads this morning however my cold has prevented me due to the fact that I sinply can't breathe properly.

A rest day for me it seems.  With the Wisbech race at the weekend, and my first event of 2012 - my week preparation will go like this:

Monday: Weights on legs & Back + Skating at Maldon
Tuesday: Cycle into work + Wattbike Easy half hour
Wednesday: Cycle into work + Chest, Arms & Core
Thursday: Cycle into Work + Wattbike sprints (5x500m)
Friday: Hour Wattbike session
Saturday: 25 - 30 Mile cycle into the morning before travelling to my Dad's in March.
Sunday: Racing 10, 15, 20 & 20 lap races.

.... Busy week!

Feeling stronger!

Well I had a pretty decent days training:

12 miles cycle into work - 15k on the WattBike - Chest & Abs - 12 mile cycle home.

I am definitely feeling stronger, however I think that i'm lacking the intensity of interval training in my program.  I do have a concern as too whether this will go against my prep for indoor and track (marathons should be fine!)

Anyway, sleep time for me - morning aches will probably dictate my training tomorrow!

A mixed week!

Well its been a bit of a weird one this week in terms of highs and lows:

Monday's skating session was one of the best I've had in a while, 10 minute warm up and then something I like to call "bundling the whole senior men's indoor champs races into one nice pyramid interval session" or BWSMICRONPIS for short....

Basically it went:

100m
2min active recovery (AR)
500m
2 min AR
1500m
2 min AR
3000m
2 min AR
1500m
2 min AR
500m
2 min AR
100m

Basically 2 X 500m (heat & final) 2 X 1500m (Heat & Final) 1 X 3000 (Relay Distance) and then two 100m (TT distances).

It was a really solid session, although my back went towards the end.  Aside from that, it was DECENT :)

Well, the back actually got worse the next day, which lead to an unplanned 2 rest days.  However, I managed to get out and do 30 miles on the bike yesterday, with a 30 and then a 50 mile outing Saturday & Sunday (Not attending the Sutton Bonnington Indoor Race due to lack of funds)

My back is a lot better, but still not 100% - when it is, some extra back work outs will be added to the training plan!
